James Clapperton

James Clapperton, composer and pianist, was born in Aberdeen in 1968 and at the age of 9 moved to Banchory, Aberdeenshire.

He studied music at St. Mary’s Music School in Edinburgh. He also studied in Freiburg and Buffalo University, Exeter University and at Sussex University where he received a DPhil in composition.

He debuted at the 1985 Edinburgh Festival, and in 1988 was awarded the Kranichsteiner MusikPreis at the Darmstadt festival for new music. In 1991 he toured with John Cage giving the world premier of Europera 3. In 1993 he won the PRS award for his violin concerto.
